FOR THE LOVE OF READING

AN INSPIRATION TO GEN Y
Anybody who has seen this person would describe him as a passionate, dedicated old man who comes  punctually everyday to open his small lending library situated near the Kellys' junction, beside the ever busy and noisy Balfour road. Mr. Baskaran the proprietor of the Kandan lending library (which is barely big enough to contain 5 people at once) is a person whose love for books is indescribable. I hope I can do justice in describing this amazing personality.
A PHOTO OF THE LIBRARY
Kandan lending library was started in the 1980s. Mr. Baskar found his profound love and passion for books at the tender age of 23. He earlier  worked in the prestigious Easwari lending library, before following his own dream to start an establishment of his own. This soft spoken man has had the privilege of being the personal book adviser to legendary actor Rajinikanth, when the latter was just starting his acting career. his famous clients also include Dr. Chokalingam and several TV actors.
His love for books started through his religious activities. He started by reading various religious and Tamil books, and goes on to say that Tamil is a beautiful language. His library is named after the God he worships. You probably will not believe it but he has read every book in his library. Ask his opinion on anything-- Famous Five, Poirot, Alistair Maclean to the latest Jeffrey Archer novels and you can bet he has gone through every word of it and even expresses his opinion like a professional book critic. His favourite authors are Jeffrey Archer and Sidney Sheldon.
MR. BASKARAN

A tiny library does not mean much income. His average monthly income is around INR 7000, most of which goes to pay his library's rent, and other bills. Yet he is unfazed by his low income and always says service comes before personal gain. He started the library to spread knowledge among people, especially children. To him money means nothing if you cannot use it to do good for society.
He is an inspiration to everybody because he follows his passion and not money or comfort. Truly, I was inspired by him, and I am sure you will be too.
A BIG SALUTE TO YOU SIR.
